Join Avatar: The Way of Waters Effects Supervisor, David Caeiro, as he explores the elements and effects that breathe life into Pandora, covering the technology and processes that helped bring Director James Cameron's artistic vision to the big screen.

With over 2,200 water shots, it was essential that the look and feel of the water felt cohesive as it interacted with other elements and characters. David will discuss the journey from plate to final, beginning with the physical starting point of real water to capture it's motion and adding fine details like foam, bubbles, spray and cloth interactions to enhance the look.

From the jungle to the reefs, the world of Pandora is filled with vibrant plant life. David will share how the team created the dynamic and natural feel to the environments – using air flow and underwater currents to give motion as well as utilising a new frictional hard contact collision system.

Throughout the film we follow Colonel Quaritch's blazing path of destruction on his quest to find the Sully family. David will touch on the process for achieving these fiery sequences using a new workflow and drawing from onset reference to guide their development. The final explosive battle is a culmination of the FX teams work, as fire, plants and water simulations are seamlessly integrated for a truly spectacular third act.

David joined Wētā FX in 2009 as an FX Artist for James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster film Avatar and has recently been awarded a VES and an Annie for his role as FX Supervisor on Avatar: The Way of Water.

Since starting his career as a Modeler at A Coruña, David has been involved in a range of projects, gaining over 20 years of industry experience.

Over his time at Wētā FX, he has gone on to be Lead FX Artist on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and FX Supervisor on films such as Jungle Book and War of the Planet of the Apes where he took home his first VES win.
