Spain took center stage in leading one of the biggest VFX shows ever supervised from Barcelona: Borderlands. This project had a bit of everything—from creatures to the recreation of Pandora’s stunning environment, plus FX-driven sequences like the Canyon Chase with flying vehicles and the formidable Thresher monster. The turnaround was intense: 500 shots delivered in just three months, with supervision across DNEG and ReDefine teams in 7 locations (Vancouver, Montreal, Barcelona, Sofia, Budapest, Mumbai, and Chennai).

To tackle such a massive production, the work was split into two main units: Sanctuary and Wasteland. Ferran Domenech led all Sanctuary City sequences (plus Tiny Tina’s Quarry). He tackled a demanding creative and logistic challenge, producing dozens of full CG shots on a tight Schedule.

In this presentation, Ferran will dive into the creative and logistical solutions that made it possible to deliver a show the size of Borderlands from Spain, working hand-in-hand with teams across three continents and seven cities.

Ferran Domenech is an award-winning VFX Supervisor. He recently joined DNEG as a VFX Supervisor and Animation Director and has over 24 years of experience in the industry. He most recently supervised Bureau 749 for director Chuan Lu. Prior to that, he worked on Lionsgate’s Borderlands and Columbia Pictures Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. He was honored for his outstanding animation supervision of Disney’s live-action feature The Little Mermaid and Alejandro Iñárritu’s Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths.

Ferran worked many years at MPC as a VFX and Animation Supervisor. He is now part of DNEG’s global team, supporting and building animation teams all over the world. His credits as a VFX Supervisor include, among other shows: Alien: Covenant, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, A Monster Calls, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Godzilla, Prometheus and several movies in the Harry Potter series, including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and 2, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
